Aari or Mochi embroidery is named after the cobblers and leather workers of Kutch and Saurashtra known as mochis, who developed the art of embroidering in a fine silk chain-stitch on silk, satin and cotton cloth using an ari- a fine awl like needle. The embroidery was done on an adda or a frame and the thread is passed through the cloth from below. The works was done on skirts, bodices, sari borders, children's caps, decorative squares (chaklas), doorway friezes (torans), summer carpets, tent curtains, manuscript covers and hangings for ritual purposes. The embroidery was done in bright colours with chain stitch and occasionally with the profuse use of tiny round mirrors. The motifs were traditional folk motifs , stylized plants with parrots and peacocks, figures of women, and animals like elephants and horses.
